The Uniqueness of
the Shoah
There have been many instances of entire peoples being exterminated throughout history. However, all these events occurred in the context of wars, revolts, and, in general, were linked to the fact that the defeated refused to accept their loss. The extermination of six million Jews, on the other hand, happened when they were not at all opposed to fascism (in fact, many had even supported it) and was carried out by a people who did not resist the deportations.
Even the Nazis themselves could not initially imagine that millions would be exterminated; the idea was always one of deportation to some distant place. A small group of people systematically exterminated an immense number of people in a horrifying way—something that had never happened before. And we hope it will never happen again.
This is a unique event in history.
