Numbers
Numbers never lie—but it is crucial to understand what they actually reveal. When we apply mathematics to physics (for example, calculating a missile’s trajectory), the variables are few and easily identifiable. However, in the human realm, variables are infinite, difficult to evaluate, and even harder to pinpoint.
For instance, numbers may tell us that a certain number of migrants have arrived, but they do not explain why. One might argue that with a different government, the number would be higher or lower, or that migration depends instead on the climate, wars, and countless other factors.
