Women's Clothing
The idea that it is men who
decide how women should
dress is condemned as
misogyny: for Muslims, women
should be covered from head
to toe; for Westerners, they
should be half-naked. In
both cases, patriarchy is
invoked, while women should
be free to dress as they
wish.
On the surface, this
reasoning seems reasonable,
but let’s delve a bit deeper.
Everyone, man or woman,
faces the challenge of
finding a partner—of "winning
over" the opposite sex, as
it used to be said.
Women, therefore, dress in
ways they believe will
appeal to men.
In the past, women arrived
at marriage as virgins
because otherwise, they
might not have married at
all. Today, with the
situation reversed, a woman
who doesn't "give in" may
not make it to marriage (or
even a long-term
relationship). In essence,
one must act in ways that
please men.
But the same applies to men, who behave in ways they believe will appeal to women.
