Politics and Ethics
In the political realm, what matters is not what is inherently right (if that even has meaning) but what people perceive as right.
I could, like Saint Francis, believe that true joy lies in embracing Sister Poverty, renouncing all pleasures, including sexual ones. But on a social level, how many people could genuinely share this, albeit noble, vision? In Saint Francis’s time, perhaps one in a thousand; today, perhaps one in a million?
We cannot structure a society around these noble principles alone.
