Judges apply (or at least they should) laws without considering socio-economic consequences, whereas politicians act (or at least they should) based on those consequences.
In essence, on one side lies the principle of fiat iustitia et pereat mundus ("let justice be done, though the world perish"), and on the other, the reason of State, where collective interests prevail over individual ones. This creates an inevitable conflict, which is further exacerbated when referring to international principles that are just but difficult to implement and often theoretical.
What, for example, does “gender equality,” “LGBT rights,” or even “freedom of religion” mean exactly?
