Rights and Historical Awareness

We tend to believe that our principles (freedom, the election of power, gender equality, homosexuality) are self-evident truths. BUT THIS IS NOT THE CASE, because it is difficult to claim that something generally denied for millennia—and still denied by the majority of peoples today—is self-evident. This, to me, seems quite evident.

This points to a lack of historical awareness, an inability to perceive the evolution of mentalities.
We cannot, therefore, simply dismiss as nonsense, barbarity, or stupidity everything that goes against our principles. Instead, we could demonstrate that these principles have yielded good results, while also acknowledging their negative aspects.

In any case, I believe it is crucial that there be free debate, that no opinion is criminalized or prohibited, whether in practice or by law: this is the foundation of democracy.
