Freedom and Laws
If each of us, acting according to our own pleasure and judgment, could create progress and well-being, then there would be no need for a state, laws, traffic codes, regulations, authorities, and so on—in short, no need for society. We would be like ants, where each ant does what it must, and everything works perfectly. But we are human beings; we don't follow instinctive rules, but instead, we create the rules ourselves. And it is only in this way, unique among all living beings, that we progress—from caves to the digital age.
We can then discuss which norms are necessary and within what limits, but norms are indeed essential.
