By 1943, the war was absolutely and irrevocably lost. In the following two years, the Germans defended themselves to the extreme, but none of the battles had an uncertain outcome: they were all doomed from the start and indeed were all lost, from the Salerno landing to the final defense of Berlin.
Thus, millions of people died unnecessarily; in fact, the majority of the victims were during that period.
