Liberal Democracy
In the 19th century, the term "liberal" was used to refer to those who only wanted a constitution while preserving the monarchy, and "democrats" (like Mazzini) were those who wanted to overthrow the monarchy entirely. Currently, liberal democracy is contrasted with illiberal democracy and signifies a limit to the power of the majority constituted by rights. However, in all democratic constitutions, principles such as the equality of citizens and religious freedom are declared, and I do not know of any democracy that does not proclaim them.
