The Poor and Democracy
One of the fundamental arguments against
democracies is that they favor the interests of the majority over those of
minorities, whereas power should be an impartial arbiter that acts for justice.
I would also like to provide a modern example that concerns me: in our society,
the poor are a disorganized minority, and the measures in their favor are paid
for by the majority. So, for a political party, is it better to promise to help
the poor or to lower taxes in order to win the elections?
This is the parable of unemployment benefits (grandiosely called "citizenship
income").
