Infant Mortality
It is certainly true that contraceptives provide the option to avoid having
children, but the issue is complex. In the past, naturally, there were many
children because infant mortality was high, and thus women were unavailable for
other activities. Then, infant mortality plummeted: among some peoples,
demographic growth became catastrophic, while in others, there is a trend
towards low birth rates which is not yet clearly perceived but is equally
catastrophic.
