Intellectuals and Capitalism
It seems to me that intellectuals do not realize (and therefore condemn) why
ordinary people prefer ugly capitalism to the beautiful dream of communism. But
the reason is as simple as ordinary people are.
At some point, it became evident to everyone that capitalism (I would say the
liberal socialist world) has produced much more prosperity for people than the
communist dream, which has become a nightmare almost everywhere. In short, the
worker of the 1960s no longer has the atavistic problem of being able to feed
himself but has the Fiat 600 with which he goes on vacation: why should he
prefer communism? Because consumerism, that is, vacationing in a Fiat 600, is
alienating, a new fascism, a denial of true values... But please, spare us the
