Yeltsin and Putin
During the Yeltsin era, there was ample freedom of thought, and the elections in
which he was elected in '96 were democratic: in fact, they were highly uncertain,
and against all predictions, Yeltsin barely won.
With Putin, things have changed: opponents are arrested and poisoned, and no one
doubts the outcome of the elections. We have thus transitioned from a democracy
(in its initial state) to a non-democracy.
