The Oldest Profession

It is not true at all that prostitution is as old as the world; instead, it is a product of civilized societies. In primitive societies, every newly pubescent woman was given in marriage, and polygamy was prevalent; there was no room for prostitution.

With civilization, however, a different order emerged: the unavailability of women, the need to satisfy men without women, and women without husbands gave rise to prostitution.
